Many organizations and people seem to want to take credit for White Cane Safety Day, however, it was the work of the National Federation of the Blind which got it started. White Cane Safety Day is celebrated to remind all of us about the abilities, rights, and responsibilties of the blind.
§ 169d. White Cane Safety Day
The President is hereby authorized to issue annually a proclamation designating October 15 as White Cane Safety Day and calling upon the people of the United States to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
